Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman has refused an invitation to meet with Presiden Barak Obama when he arrives to Sin City to campaign for Nevada Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Reid. Goodman was invited by the White House to meet the president on his arrival to Las Vegas on Thursday night and join him at a town hall event scheduled for Friday.

Goodman spokesman Jace Radke said the mayor would consider the invitation if Obama promised to apologize for comments made last week suggesting that people saving money for college shouldn’t spend in it partying in Las Vegas. Several days after his remark, Obama sent a letter to Nevada Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defending his position and explaining that he never said anything anything negative about Las Vegas. However, that was the second time that President Obama uses Las Vegas as an example of excessive spending.  Last year, Obama said that corporations and banks shouldn’t be using federal bailout funds to pay for trips to Las Vegas, the Super Bowl or corporate jets, which according to several tourism and casino officials, caused a negative impact on the number of meetings and conventions held at Las Vegas hotels.

The comments caused surprise and anger among several business sectors affected by the economic meltdown. According to Goodman, Obama’s words are discouraging visitors from coming to Las Vegas and will further depress the local economy, which is heavily dependent on the gambling, entertainment and hospitality industry.

“An apology won’t be acceptable this time. I don’t know where his vendetta comes from, but we’re not going to let him make his bones by lambasting Las Vegas.” Goodman said at a press conference held early this month.

French poker pro, David Benyamine, has taken down Party Poker’s Premier League IV tournament held at the M Resort and Casino in Las Vegas after outlasting a final table that featured fellow pros Daniel Negreanu, Phil “The Unabomber” Laak, Roland De Wolfe, Luke ‘FullFlush’ Schwartz and PartyPoker’s online qualifier Giovanni Safina.

After the the preliminary heads up heats between Daniel Negreanu, Team Party pro Ian Frazer and Roland De Wolfe, the final table action began with Phil Laak taking leading the chip count with 480.000 . But after more than three hours of play, Laak became the first eliminated player on the final table when tens were unable to hold against Benyamine’s A-K.

The next to go was British Pro Roland de Wolfe, who was sent to the rail in fifth by Daniel Negreanu. Unfortunatelly for Negreanu, he joined de Wolfe on the rail shortly afterwards. Schwartz and Benyamine entered the final heads up after after Schwartz eliminated online qualifier Giovanni Safina in third place with $120,000.

Schwartz took an early advantage in heads-up play with 1,320,000 chips againts Benyamine’s 580,000. However, it didn’t take long for Benyamine to double his chips and level things up. In the final hand of the night, Schwartz raise with Q-2 spades and Benyamine make the call with Q-8.

The flop came 5-3-Q and Benyamine check-raised, with Schwartz moving all. After a few minutes contemplating the situation, Benyamine called. The turn card was a 7h, reducing Schwartz chances to win the hand and the title. The river came 6 hearts, sealing Benyamine’s victory and sending Schwartz home with $200,000 for his runner-up finish.

“It feels really good winning a title, I’m not used to it. The whole time I never thought about winning, I just wanted to do what I thought was right. I know people always say that when they win but it’s true. I haven’t really been around for a while and I hope this gives me momentum going forward! I really enjoyed the format and competition – I’m sure it will make great TV. Position in these final tables can help and I didn’t do anything special today, I just got hands at the right time and played my own game. Luke (Schwartz) is a very impulsive player but I just stuck to my own game heads-up and it was enough.” said Benyamine after taking the event.

Already generating the kind of buzz only befitting perhaps the world’s greatest golfer and philanderer of our time, the Tiger Woods 2010 Mea Culpa Tour is also scheduled to stop at The TODAY Show (co-host Matt Lauer is an avid golfer) and on Oprah Winfrey’s couch — and no doubt at several major upcoming PGA tournaments. (The Master’s begins just after Easter. Watch Tiger rise up and ascend to golfing heaven!)

Interestingly, according to National Enquirer executive editor Barry Levine (as reported on ESPN’s E:60), the whole Tiger Woods mistress story was almost a non-story. Almost. As we all know what eventually happened. (Fore!)

Me, I don’t really care about Tiger. Yeah, I’m a bit disappointed that the image was far from the reality. But that’s the problem with our celebrity- and athlete-worshiping culture. We forget that celebrities are just actors and athletes are not heroes. They are just people who are really good at what they do — and happen to get a lot of press coverage.

I just hope that Tiger’s little coming out party won’t hurt sales of the Tiger Woods Mistress Commemorative Plate Collection. (Order your set today! Supplies are limited!)
