As we move deep into the month of March, we inch ever closer to the 2010 March Madness bracket tournament and the madness that ensues each and every spring in college basketball. With just one week remaining in conference play, the right to automatic bids are already up for grabs.

On that note, here are the top five teams lording over the college basketball right now, starting with the best of ‘em all, the Syracuse Orange. Syracuse’s rise to the top of the national polls produced an Orange infusion in the college basketball power rankings.

The Orange’s 95-77 victory Saturday over Villanova helped Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim regain his position as the no.1 coach in the power rankings too, them rankings that measure the nation’s top performers at each position. Picked before the season to finish sixth in the Big East, Syracuse already has clinched at least a share of the conference title. With a 27-2 overall record and an incredibly effective two-three zone defensive scheme, Syracuse should be the team to beat once the brackets are here.

Following at the second spot are the Kansas Jayhawks. After suffering their first conference loss, the Jayhawks are determined to bounce back. Coach Bill Self said, ”I am believing we can get something out of (the OSU loss). I don’t think the thing is broken. I do think we need to evaluate our things. We need to take great pride in the things that help us win, especially this time of year.”

The loss at Oklahoma State could be a sign of fate for Kansas as the last time the Jayhawks visited Stillwater back in 2008, they suffered a one-point defeat. After getting the services of multi - time All - Star Tracy McGrady this 2010 NBA basketball season from a three team trade with the Houston Rockets and the Sacramento Kings, the New York Knicks were able to clear enough salary-cap space for the Knicks to possibly sign two maximum-salary free agents this summer.

That’s right, the New York Knicks could recruit LeBron James by giving him the option of choosing which other free agent he wants from the likes of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson, Amare Stoudemire and Dirk Nowitzki.

However, getting LeBron James out of Cleveland won’t be easy since the Cavs, who own the league’s best record, bolstered their lineup with the addition of former Wizards forward Antawn Jamison. If Cleveland advances to its second NBA Finals stint in four years with LeBron, the odds of him leaving his home state figure to be diminished.

It seems Kobe Bryant is having some injury issues at the midway point of the 2010 NBA basketball season. In case you haven’t noticed it yet, Kobe hasn’t been seeing action lately, all thanks to this sore ankle he has been nursing.

Yes, Kobe Bryant missed his fifth consecutive game with an ankle injury, missing out on their rematch with their rivals Boston Celtics, at the Staples Center last Thursday night.

He did not play against the Golden State Warriors though they won the game 104 - 94 with huge help from other Laker guard Shannon Brown. Brown had his best game of his career, who paced the Lakers with 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Los Angeles Lakers improved to 4-0 before losing to the Celtics since Bryant pulled himself out of the lineup with a high sprain in his left ankle. Hehe… Good luck with that. After being charged with one count of felony gun possession for carrying an unlicensed weapon and being suspended by the NBA without pay for the rest of the 2010 NBA basketball season, Arenas is accepting the challenge by writing a letter to his young fans addressing his recent troubles. The letter was published in The Washington Post.

Known as Agent Zero in the NBA, Gilbert Arenas started off his letter by expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to do something good in the face of the very bad situation he created.

For all of you who didn’t know, Arenas is serving a suspension for his role in an argument with Washington Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton. Following the argument, Arenas took guns to the team’s practice facility, an act he deemed a joke at the time.

He mentioned in his note that NBA Commissioner David Stern has good reason to suspend him. Arenas said he is trying to right his wrongs, most of which, the effect of his actions may have on kids who see NBA players as role models.

As for Arenas’ future in Washington, it sure doesn’t sound like there is much of one. Even if the team doesn’t void his contract, a scenario that seems more and more likely, it’s hard to imagine Arenas wearing a Washington Wizards uniform ever again.
